    Lawn chief 8 hp mower
I recently found an old Lawn Chief 32" deck. I've got it cleaned up and the motor running. I cannot find a model number on it anywhere. It has an 8 hp Briggs and Stratton engine, it's a 3 speed and has a cigarette lighter. The primary drive belt broke during my second test drive. I can't find any information on this mower, let alone the belt size I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
My guess out of the 1980's off the bat, but you can assist. Stmped into the blower housing above the spark plug are three sets of digits; Model, Type and Code. My guess is the first is 190702 or 190707 depending on how you crank it. Of particular interest is the Code, but the more you give me the better info I can supply.
    Peace,

Those are about the only numbers on the thing and I thought they related to the engine specifically and not necessarily the entire machine. But here they are: 191707 5128-01 77060311

    Hi,
Yes, those numbers are the engine info, but the Code tells me your engine was made on June 3, 1977. That gives me a starting point. Here is a link, wrong size deck, but see how much it ressembles it:

It's not that similar. Mine is more boxy on the front end, has headlights, it doesn't have a visible chain, the brake/clutch is the same pedal, the blade engage lever is on the left, height adjustment is on the deck, the key, light control, cigarette lighter and gear box are in the center between your legs, not on the console panel, which on this has an amp gauge (left side) and the throttle control (right side). The gears are top left, across, bottom left and across 3, 2, R, 1. Tires are 13x5 on the front and 16x7.5 on the back. The diagram showing the belts on page 24 looks similar, but the broken belt is 3/8" x 69" or 70".

Thanks for you help so far, hope this helps you some more.

    Hi,
I knew it was electric start; that 7 at the end of the model number.
Okay, try calling 1(800)800-7310 between 8 - 5 on weekdays and explaining what you have. Lawn Chief is now an MTD brand, but back then it was Aircap or General Power. They likely have the manual archived and can be extremely nice and helpful people. Tell them the year on the engine and all the other particulars. If you get someone helpful, which could be likely, they can look stuff all the way back into the 1960's

    Hi,
BTW, the engine manual is small enough to attach here.

If you still have your 32" Lawn Chief and are looking for a manual, let me know. I have one of those mowers also and can make a copy of the manual.
