Kitchen sink, which never even had a slow drain, is filling with water and the water eventually empties but into the dishwasher.

Kathy, your kitchen drain is clogged and needs to be snaked.

Your dirty water empties into DW because you don't have either Air Gap or High Loop on your DW discharge hose. Raise the DW hose as high as possible and attach it to to bottom of the counter top. That will solve the problem with sink draining into DW.

Thank you but I am confused the dishwasher was installed almost a year ago and I have never had a kitchen drain problem before today not even a slow drain. So how could I all of a sudden get such a clog? Also when I put the dishwasher through a cycle all the water drains okay and this confuses me too as would this not be the same drain as the kitchen sink?

Blocked kitchen drains are common occurrence and may take long time to show. There is entire Drain Cleaning industry based on clogged drains. Dishwasher installation has really nothing to do with the blocked drain. DW is another plumbing fixture that disposes water into the drain.

It may be an easy fix if there is a handy man in the house. If not, call Drain Cleaning company from Yellow Pages and request to have your kitchen drain snaked. They should be done in no time.

Okay Milo thank you but the point is the dishwasher drains completely into the drain. If the sink drain is clogged would that not be the same drain that the dishwasher empties into?

And I had a plumber at my house today who used a liquid Glug ON and after 1/2 hour the drain seemed fine however running the water to later started the non-draining issue once again. Also he quoted a snaking job at 175/hour because he needs to rent a long snake.

Can't because my digital camera is not working

And I must add I throw nothing down my drain, no grease, no food nothing. I have lived in this house for 37 years and not one drain has even run slow much less been clogged.

The plumber didn't do good job. I hope he didn't charge you for his visit. We wouldn't. The clog is probably further away. Yes, he needs longer snake. His price seems to be a bit high, too. You should not be paying more then $100.00 for the entire job.

Kathy If you fill the sink to the point that it will not drain and then you turn on the dishwasher and move it to cancel or drain what happens. Tell me and I will explain things to you.

The sink drains slowly and the dishwasher drains into the sink

And if I put the DW through a normal cycle some water comes into the sink during the wash cycle but not after that; after that the DW just drains.

Kathy, yes, DW drains into the sink drain. If you have Garbage Disposer than DW drains through Garbage Disposer. If you don't have GD than it drains through Branch T fitting under your sink.

Please, do this: turn water ON in your sink. See how long it takes before you see water backing up to the sink.

No garbage disposal. Water takes 5 minutes or longer to back up into sink.

Do you know how is your DW connect it to the drain ? Can you see the DW hose to connect to the drain under the sink ? Or is DW somehow connected under the house ?

It would really help if you could post a photo of you cabinet plumbing...

This tells the whole story. As confirmed on above posts, your kitchen sink drain line is partially plugged and needs to be augered. The blockage may be just enough to were it won't take a hole sink full of water, but little enough to allow most of the diswasher to drain before backing up into sink. The dishwasher drainage water should never back up into the sink, if it does, this is a clear indication that the kitchen sink drain is partially plugged. If water runs five minutes before backing up, then no chemicals are going to fix this, only fix is going to be augering drain. I know you have never had a backup problem before, but over the years, the line has been building up waste from dishwasher soil and soap discharge and has become restricted enough now to cause drainage problems. Make sure that the line is correctly augered(biggest bit they can get in there, and augere sent down the line far enough, better to put more than enough cable in than not enough) so that the pipe is cleaned as good as it can be and you should be good to go for (hopefully) many more years.

I would almost guarantee that having the line augered correctly will solve your dilema. Hope to hear how you make out. Good luck. Lee.

PS. Also, while you have the plumber there, have them secure the high loop of your dishwasher the way Milo said earlier. IF high loop is secured correctly, when you sink line cloggs, it will not allow water to drain back into dishwasher, it will just stand in the sink.
