Do it yourself TV repair is NEVER recommended! I had a friend years ago who was a TV repairshop owner/repairman. He told me that due to the high electrical voltage held within the TV set if not properly discharged prior to opening the box, you could get hit with one heck of a whallop and cause serious injury or even death.

DO NOT OPEN your set under any circumstances.

If the TV is in that good a condition, take it to a repair shop and get an estimate. If the estimate is more than the replacement of this TV buy a new LCDTV then don't have it repaired. But if the repair is a minor deal, then have it professionally repaired.

You can get very good LCDTV's nowadays for reasonable prices. The prices of these sets has come way down from a few years ago.

I bought a new Panasonic Viera LCDTV at the beginning of December and I am quite pleased with the features and the sharp, clear picture. It also consumes very little electricity as well. And it has a built in QAM tuner so I don't need a cable box to get the digital cable signal. My Panasonic analog set that I replaced was from 2002 and weighed a ton compared to the lightweight LCD set I have now.

LED's generally don't die. They get dimmer. The remote control probably died.

There is a cheap card (you expose it to light and point the IR control at it. If it glows, the remote is transmitting something) that you can use to detect the IR output of the remote control.

Interested in a source and the availability of a remote. I may be able to check. There is always a universal remote for about $15 that may work.
