Trane furnace
Our XE80 is a joke. About 80 to 85% of the time the igniter won't come on, just the blower along with the 4 flashes indicating an open high limit device. Another 15% of the time it will ignite, but the blower won't come on. Once in a great, great while it will actually work, but just for one time - the next call for heat will bring the blower only problem.

Sorry to hear,, sounds like you might need to call out a hvac tech, if/when you do call a trane rep.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, we've paid more for service calls than the original cost. The high limit device has been replaced 4 times, they replaced the circuit board and also the gas valve unit. It seems that all they are interested in is making service calls, not solving the problem.

Some of the high limits possibly reset after a certain amount of time or after a power cycle. That may explain the odd behavior.
Restricted exhaust, exhaust too long or too many fittings and or a cracked heat exchanger.
Do you know exactly which limit is exceeded?
You might want to contact Trane directly.

The high limit device has been replaced 4 times
I would start looking for a duct work problem since the unit cannot move the heat out of the unit as fast as necessary.

I have a tr90 having same problem. 4 blinking lights, reset high limit to get it to ignite. Service man said cause was not enough vents, too small of cold air return and unit was oversized for our home (2800 sq ft, single level). How is the static pressure checked? They said we would probably have to have duct work revised at a sizeable $$$$ cost. Appreciate some
Of your expert advice. New User - great site,, thanks for any help

Thanks for all of the suggestions. After all of the negative experiences with Trane (also American Standard headquarters when we tried contacting them for assistance) contacted a dealer for another brand. Took them about 45 minutes to diagnose the cause. It required replacing 4 parts, and they called the local Trane dealer (the one we've had negative experiences with) who said it would take about 2 weeks to get one of the parts. They substituted a part from another brand, spent about 1 1/2 hours, and the unit runs like new. We've learned one thing: NO MORE TRANE - the product isn't that great and the service is miserable!
