    Rheem heat pump scraping noise
I have a Rheem Classic model 7F62 heat pump from 2001. When the heat kicks on it works fine but when it kicks off in heat mode we get the standard noise of operation (from what I am told) but now it makes the noise like the fan is scrapping against the sides or against metal. As the fan slows down so does the scrap noise. The colder it is outside the louder and longer the noise.
When I go inside and turn the thermostat up a degree, (during the day when its warmer) let it run for a minute during the day, and then have someone turn it down 2 degrees so the unit will shut off while Im standing there, it is as quiet as a mouse... no issues. The unit is right outside our bedroom window so at night we hear it loud and clear but of course it is colder outside.
I have an old friend who had a business fixing these come up in the summer and soldered my coil which had a leak. He fixed that just fine but also took the 2 screws off that holds the fan assembly in place, picked it up and when done laid it back and put the screws back. I would call him back but he has since passed away.
I just pulled the fan unit up again and looked for scraps on the side but there is no way. Lots of clearance...

    Any ideas?

It may not be the blower wheel rubbing but the blower wheel has gone bad. The center hub may have broken loose from the wheel. Check for metal filing around the center or around the cups of the blower wheel.

I took the fan motor and plate screws out and lifted the assembly up looked and saw nothing unusual. After putting it back it never made the same noise.
Is the fan unit suppose to run in heat mode on the outside unit? Is it suppose to drain water too?
The noise is now more like a quick knock 3-4 times when it shuts off.

Oops. Posted in appliance by mistake. Package unit blew transformer. Found bare thermostat rubbing against case. Repaired, checked coil on contactor and the defrost board is good. Fried the new transformer. What am I missing?
