Hi, I'm working in the master bath and want to remove an old shower wall. There is a roof support approximately 58" from the corner of the outside wall stubbed with a 2x4 about 16" tall.

IM001193.jpg shows the corner of the roof at the other end
IM001194.jpg shows the stub wall of the old shower wall.

I'm thinking that the only good way is to run a couple of 2x10x12 the length of the bathroom close to that support and run another support adjacent to it, but I'm not certain how much weight the support would carry being so close to the outside wall.

I'd love to hear any comments from others that are more knowledegable than myself about such matters.

Knock it out of there. Its only under the hip rafter. The reason it was put there is the builder used a 2x6 hip rafter on a low (3-4 pitch) roof.

The support was put there to prevent any future sagging to the hip rafter.

You don't need to overkill w/ 2x10's. If after you re-framed the wall install another 2x4 if your worried about the hip sagging. It doesn't have to be in the same spot as the previous 2x.

That hip rafter is supported by the jack rafters on either side of it. These help support the hip rafter.

Should I be concerned at all about just knocking it out? Should I add a 2x4 adjacent to this before knocking it out just to be sure? Not questioning your expertise, just being cautious. :-)

There will be a small wall partition around an existing slab vent, but it will only be about 38"x18", so I can add a support on that wall closer to the base of the rafter. Will this provide any support or not?

You can just knock it out. It won't effect anything. You don't need to put it back.
You can add the 2x towards the base if you want.
If your concerned you can add support farther up the rafter with a 2x angled back into the hip and resting on a another wall section close to the rafter.

After removing the tile wall from the outside wall, I noticed some rot on two or three studs on the outside wall. This is about 2' from the corner. I'm thinking these should be replaced prior to any support removal (pic attached).

Do you agree?

Well, I added studs to shore up the rotten ones on the bad well, then I made a second leg about 10" down from the support on the roof and pulled the nailed on the support in question. There's no load on it at all, it just dangled when I pull the nail out.
