Tax deduction for therapies to special needs kids of h1 visa
    Hi,

My husband is in NJ with h1 visa. We have an autisitic kid for whom we are spending for therapies out of our packets. Can this amount be deducted in the tax?

Yes, you can deduct medical and dental expenses that you pay for yourself, your spouse and dependents are entered on line 1 of schedule A (Form 1040). The amount on line 1 is your medical expenses after you reduce it by any payments received from insurance or other sources.

You can deduct the amount of your medical and dental expenses that is more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (Form 1040, line 38).

You should check IRS Publication 502 (2009), Medical and Dental Expenses.

If the therapy is prescribed my a medical doctor, then, most likely, it IS deductible as a valid medical expense.
