    Well the easiest way is to plug a know working device into the receptacle. For example a light or radio.

    Beyond that, you would need either a Volt/Ohm meter or a circuit tester. These are readily available at any hardware store.

    If either the light or radio fail to work, the first place I would go would be to source (Main Service Panel or Subpanel) that feeds the receptacle and make sure to reset the breaker handle. All you need to do is push the breaker handle as far to the OFF position as you can. Then push the breaker handle back to the ON position.

    If the outlet still fails then I would respectively suggest that if this is your home, you call a licensed electrician. If you are in rental property or condo, call the landlord and have them fix the problem.
