What is a standard fireplace? Does it have a model number and brand name? Many units have a automatic pilot and those units you do not light with a match.

    Majestic model # NVBR36RN

We opened and saw one valve that we believe controls the gas. Then on the other side there are 3 nobs, one is ingiter and the other is pilot/on/off, the last controls the high/low gas.

The PDF file will not download so I am doing a copy paste of the instructions. This FP came with two different gas valves and instructions are different for both. The first one is for a standing pilot unit. Follow the directions and if the pilot stays on then the unit should work. If the pilot does not stay on then it might have a defective thermocouple or the pilot orifice might be plugged up. This unit also uses a thermopile to generate a small electric charge to operate the gas valve and controls. Usually if the pilot does not stay lit then it is time to call for a professional to do a on site visit and repair. Just make sure the company you call know about these types of fireplaces. The other type of unit I mentioned is electronic ignition and I do not believe you have that unit but if you do you will need to call for service for that unit since there are no real user serviceable parts and the electronic ignition will need to be tested.

    Lighting and Operating Instructions
    1. Turn the On/Off switch to "OFF" position or set
    The thermostat to lowest setting.
    2. Turn off all electric power to the fireplace if
    Service is to be performed.
    Lighting Instructions
    6. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas.
Then smell for gas, including near the floor. If
You smell gas, STOP! Follow "B" in the safety
Information above. If you do not smell gas, go
    To the next step.
    7. Remove glass door before lighting pilot. (See
    Glass Frame Removal section).
    8. Visibly locate pilot by the main burner.
    9. Turn knob on gas control counterclockwise
    To "PILOT".
    • If knob does not pop up when released, stop
And immediately call your service technician or
    Gas supplier.
    • If after several tries, the pilot will not stay lit,
Turn the gas control knob to "OFF" and call your
    Service technician or gas supplier.
    11. Replace glass door.
    12. Turn gas control knob to “ON” position.
    13. For RN/RP appliances turn the On/Off switch to
“ON” position or set thermostat to desired setting.
    14. Turn on all electrical power to the fireplace.
WARNING:If you do not follow these instructions exactly, a fire or explosion
May result causing property damage, personal injury or loss of life.
