    Heat Pump Issue
I have an American Standard heatpump that is 11 months old. Last year it heated fine (AC worked fine also). This year when I fired it up for heating I am running into an issue where it will heat for awhile then stops. The outside fan and inside air handler will continue to run constantly but no heat. The inside heat strips will then cycle on/off to maintain temp. I've stopped it by turning it off at the stat and by cycling the breakers. It will then heat again for awhile (anywhere from 1 hour to 1 day) then it stops again. I have confirmed no heat by touching the line from the heat pump to the airhandler. You know when it hot or not :). Am I low on Freon, is the compressor faulty?

If your system is 11 months old it is still in warranty. Call the company that installed it so they can repair it. If you mess with it you might void the warranty.

Since your system was a new install from what you are describing I would guess that you have a leak in the system. If you run low on freon (caused by a leak) the outdoor unit has a low pressure cut off. The fans will still run but the compresser will shut down and you will not get heat. Call the installers that installed the system and have them do a leak search to correct the problem. Do not allow them to just add freon and walk away. The problem will happen again until the leak is fixed. For now it would be best to set your thermostat to Emergance heat until fixed to prevent damage to the compressor.

Additionally, the compressor may not be running even though the outdoor fan is. Let your warranty serve its purpose.
