I am trying to replace the spring extension #732-04076A on a 38" yard machine by MTD. I have the pulley side located but cannot find where it hooks to the frame. Any ideas?

    Hi,
How about the model number of the machine. MTD is "famous" for their different engineering of various models and the "re-use" of parts in different areas.
    Peace,

PS or barring that, what does the spring do?

First of all, thanks in advance for your help. The model # is 13AC762F729 and it Date of Manufacture is 1/20/2006. It is a 1.15x7.90 spring that hooks to the variable speed bracket. I cannot find a place for the other end that is close to 8" from there.

    Hi,
It wouuld seem to connect to the left rear frame by the IPL (Illutrated Parts List) drawing that is available from:
    PDF Manual Web Archive
And picture attached. Use a "1" in the serial number blank.
    Peace,
