Marvin Gaye covered the song, as did others including Julian Lennon. But like wizzkid89 said, Ben E. King wrote and recorded the original version that is the one most people recognize. It is also the version that was in the movie by the same name.

If it's an oldies song you're looking for, it's by The Righteous Brothers.

No trust me it was originally recorded by Ben E. King, and that is the oldie version, like the other guy said another artist may have covered it, but the original and most popular version is by Ben E. King

Yes. Many artist have covered this song such as: John Lennon, Julian Lennon, The Searchers, Marvin Gaye, Sonny & Cher, Otis Redding, The Kingsman, Bobby Womack, Nikko, Aaron Neville, and so on...

Great old songs like this get covered a lot. Many times covers become more popular than the original, but that isn't the case here. Ben E. King's version is still the most popular and most recognized version of Stand By Me. You can listen and hear for yourself here.

Wizzkid is correct. It was originally recorded by Ben E. King. And this is unquestionably the best known version as well.
