    Hello All;

    I am really confused in getting the story behind Windows 7. Why Microsoft has named this OS 7?

    Any idea about it?

    Because it's the seventh version of Windows since Windows 95. Prior to Win 95, Windows was not a true operating system. It was a GUI shell that sat on top of DOS. So Windows internal versioning went like this:

    Win 95: 1.0
    Win 98: 2.0
    Win 98 SE: 3.0
    Win ME: 4.0
    Win XP: 5.0
    Win Vista: 6.0

    Hence Windows 7

    Win NT (mentioned in the second article Need linked to) was also 4.0, because it was developed after 98SE. But prior to Win XP, MS had two separate code bases for Windows. The one started by Win NT and the one started with Win 95. They were converged with Win XP. So ME and NT used the same internal version #s.
