    Listed below are solubility vs temperature data for an organic compound in water.

    temp. sol. In 10 mL water
    0 0.15 g
    20 0.30 g
    40 0.65 g
    60 1.10 g
    80 1.70 g

    a) Using the data in the above table, graph the solubility of the compound vs temperature. Connect the data points with a smooth curve.


    b) Suppose 0.1 g of this compound is mixed with 1.0 mL of water and heated to 80° C. Would all of the compound dissolve? Explain.


    Could anybody help me in this Q ?

    I solved a but b I didn't understand it. .

    Sure:

    A:) X is temp by the 20's and Y is the grams of compound by, say, 5's. Put down some dots and draw a line

    B:) If 10mL dissolves 1.7g at 80 degrees, then you can cross multiply:



    doing this would tell you that 0.17g can be dissolved in 1mL of water. Thus it is possible to dissolve 0.1g in it.

    I have to explain why the compound will dissolve. .

    So how can I know that 0.17g can be dissolved in 1mL of water ? I mean how you know it will dissolve ?

    It is said that 1.7g dissolves in 10 mL of water at 80 C, from your table.

    Using proportion, 1.7 g -> 10 mL
    10 mL -> 1.7 g
    1 mL -> 0.17 g

    0.17g is the maximum mass that will dissolve. So, if you have 0.1 g (which is less that 0.17g), all will dissolve at 80 C.
