Hi, I'm new and not too sure how to use this so please be patient. I have a central heat and air system for my house. It is a central a/c unit and it heats with natural gas. There is one thermostat to control both. It's a General Electric. It has 3 positions (heat, off, cool ) to turn it on or off it also has a switch for the fan ( on, auto ) you adjust the temperature at the top by ( sliding? ) it from left to right depending on the temp you want. There is no pilot light. The heater is lit electronically. I am trying to figure out if A.) I can replace it with a programmable thermostat and if so B.) what "type" not necessarily the "name brand" I need to look for. I would like to do this on my own instead of hiring a professional. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you! :)

All you need is a conventional,one heat/ one cool, programmable thermostat I suggest a honeywell. Can you tell us how many wires are hooked to current thermostat(also include any wires that are available, but not hooked to anything, and all colors or wires). You have at least four wires hooked up now, but I need to know if there is a fifth wire(for certain thermostats). If you have five wires, I suggest the honeywell pro 6000. Let us know. Lee.
