    Location of Furnace Filter
Hi, help explain. My Heatpump furnace unit is in the attic above the LV Rm. I can't find any place next to this furnace that would indicate there's an opening for a filter. Yet below the ceiling across the LV Rm into the kitchen then into the washroom next to the kitchen, there is a rectangle opening w/ grill and a filter inside (this is mounted up in the ceiling). Is this my Furnace filter? If it is, then explain why is it located so far away from the physical location of the furnace (say 25+ ft from the Furnace)? Also do Return vents ever have Filters too? We thank you in advance for your explanation.

Sounds like the filter to me,, as to why,who knows ,you would need to ask the installer why. Are you saying this is not the only return air vent in the house?
Its hard to answer your question without being able to eyeball the system

Thank you so much for reply. Yes, I'd have asked the installer, but he's long gone (the house is 10 yrs. Old). Thanks again.

It's not unusual for the filters to be installed on the return air vents. If they are directional, make sure the arrow points toward the duct, not the room.

What you have discovered is called a filter grill. They are most likely to be installed to ease the filter change process, ie; furnace is in an inconvenient location for filter change. Doesn't matter if the filter is away from the funace as long as the duct work is intact, no leaks etc.

By now, it may be time to change it again!
