    Basement RIP locations
I am looking at finishing the bathroom in my basement but am a novice. I am hoping someone can help describe what each of the drains are. I think that this is only a 2 piece bathroom but am not entirely sure.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Without knowing the dimensions of each pipe it's a long shot. I'd say the smaller pipe back by the wall is a 2" vent stack going up through your roff. Green front pipe appears to be a 3" toilet ( that is capped, right). Smaller pipe left of the steel support could be a shower or tub. Can you get closer to the two that appear cut flush with the floor? I see only one supply line coming down the back wall, anybody's guess as to hot or cold, likely cold.

Hi all... thought I would take a shot at identifying these... ;)

    See images below.

I can't tell what the flush pipes are... may be nothing. Like Ballenger said, a closer pic. Could help.

In terms of the largest pipe, looks like 6"SDR pipe with an access cover over it. I'm pretty sure this is a backwater valve... prevents water from backing up into the bathroom group should the city main or the house main itself back up due to a blockage. I attached a separate image showing the backwater valve with the flapper. If you remove the cover you should see another twist off cover down in the ground... flapper will be under that twist off cover. When you tile the floor, you will need to install the access cover (see other image below) so it is flush with the tile floor.

I have labelled the rest of the pipes in the image below. The tub dapout (boxout) is missing and that will require you to chop up some of that concrete from around the pipe so you can install the fittings needed to hook up the tub waste. If you uncap the tub drain line and pour some water into the pipe and then shine a flashlight into the pipe you should see standing water... a good thing as this will indicate that the PTRAP has been installed already and you will not have to break out too much concrete to hook up the tub drain. If no standing water after you pour the water down the drain then you will need to open up a 12"x12" box or so and install a PTRAP before hooking to the tub drain assembly.

The lavatory drain also acts as a WET VENT for the entire bathroom. Here, you will install a full size dandy cleanout (see image) and then a 2"x1.5" sanitary tee fitting for the sink drain and then continue the 2" vent up and connect onto a 2" or large vent in the basement (look for cap with FV or future vent on it) or upstairs.

The 3" waste stack that goes vertical over in the corner of the picture is missing the 3" dandy cleanout... really should be installed just in case you need it in the future... ;)

The toilet pipe should have had a wrap installed around it, but the wrap appears to be missing. This means that the concrete will need to be chipped out around the pipe about an inch or so OR you may be able to install a TWIST AND SET closet flange to the interior of the pipe.

The PVC pipe by the water pipe is probably the MAIN DRAIN CLEANOUT... will need to install a female adapter and a plug here for future access to the drain.

The water pipe itself looks to me like it is waiting for a water meter to be installed..? Let me know on this... O.K.

Anyway, that's how I am calling these...

Open up the caps, test for the ptrap at the tub... check for the backwater valveflapper and we'll see what we think after you confirm these.

    MARK

PS... the tub drain could also be a kitchen sink drain... uncap and do the trap test. If trap present then definitely for tub. If not then could be for a sink... maybe.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question. I took a look at the valves and updated the picture with some further information.

    Tally...

At the metal drain, is there standing water down inside the pipe? If not sure, pour water down and let me know if water is present afterward (use flashlight to look down after water is poured).

The 3" pipe, is that a metal ring around the edge? A close up pic. of this pipe would be great!!

You marked that 4" as a backwater valve and the green pipe as the sewer..? That can't be right? The 6" green pipe has to be the backwater valve as the backwater valve has a 6" cover... ;) Please check on this again... o.k.

The 2" pipe could be planned for a shower or a kitchen sink. To know for sure, remove the cap and pour a half gallon of water into the pipe. After the water is poured use a flashlight and check to see if water remains in the pipe. If water remains in the pipe then this has a PTRAP and is most likely for a future shower. You may or may not need to chip away some concrete from around the drain pipe to fit the shower strainer assembly. If no PTRAP present then it is likely that they planned for a kitchen sink here... maybe?

Tell me about the pipe to the right and behind the green pipe in the picture that was not labelled above. What pipe size and what does that pipe measure from the center of the pipe to the stud wall... o.k.

How about the water pipe? Water meter?

    Please answer all questions...
