    4 prong dryer, 3 prong apartment
    Hi there,

    I live in Brazil, and brought over a 4 prong clothes dryer from the States. I am having trouble setting it up, as here everything is 3-prong.

    My main question is, what do I do with the green cable that is connected to the external ground conductor?

    I've had two electricians come and take a look at it. Both of them failed to get the dryer running (one of them managed to get it started, but it stopped after 10 seconds). The power supply here is 220 V.

    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    If this is straight Brazilian 220v the dryer WILL NOT work. In fact, if someone got it to work I bet the reason it stopped is because the motor burned out.

    An electric dryer has several 120v loads, including the motor. If you ran that on 220v for any length of time it would not fare well.

    Well, they got it to work, and then it stopped, but after a few minutes you can try it again and it'll run again, and then stop again. It's very strange.

    I have a friend who also brought over a dryer from the US and theirs works fine (same city, same power supply).

    If I got a transformer and converted it to 110, would that fare better?

    Suggestions
    Check to see how your friends dryer is connected.
    With a meter check the voltage supplied to your friends residence and check your own residence.
