Tutor for 10 yr. old student
Can anyone give me any suggestions on what reading books may interest a ten year old student. I know they now have color coded books according to reading level... Which level would be most appropriate for a ten year old?

What reading level is the kid really at? I was always ahead of the level I was "supposed" to be. Are you able to take him to the library? The librarian could direct you to the books that are most popular for a ten year old and then he/she would be able to help books that interest them.

I would give him books that are above his reading level, or wouldn't even worry about it.

Story stories by Bret Hart such as "The Luck of Roaring Camp," short stories by O. Henry such as "The Gift of the Magi," short stories by N. Hawthorne such as "The Great Stone Face." Jack London's White Fang and Call of the Wild. Greek and Roman mythology. American Indian legends. Grimm's Fairy Tales. Aesop's Fables.

And let him write stories. Give him a sentence and let him write a story from it. Show him a picture or photo and let him write a story about it.

First, I would ask the child what interests them. You can test a child's reading level in many ways. If you do not have any means to do that, pick a book at a third or fourth grade reading level to start. Have the child read a few pages to you. If he or she struggles, then choose a book that is a lower reading level. Even if the child can read the pages to you perfectly, ask a few questions about what they just read to you. If he/she can't do this, then choose a lower level book. Many children read smoothly, yet can't comprehend what they read. See if there is a public library with Accelerated Reader tests. It is a quick way to test for comprehension when you don't have any other means of testing.
