[Tekiel]

I once read a fantasy book (pre 1995) that has stuck with me ever since. Sadly, I lost the title of the book and can only remember bits and pieces of it. It's not much, so I understand if I never find the answer, but maybe someone here loved it as well. Here's what I remember:

The book (or one of the chapters) starts with a male hero running through the streets that he grew up in, smelling blood all around him. I think at one point he sees his friends all dead and bleeding.

At one point he meets up with a girl and they are captured. They are being led somewhere and can't escape because the guards check the ropes every hour or so.

They are fighting some animal (gryphon?) that is trying to kill them. They end up killing it, and it changes it's color of skin from a dark (maybe black) color to a lighter color and becomes their ally.

At the end, the tower housing the main bad guy is destroyed and they have to run out of the basement of it before it collapses.

I'm sorry I can't remember anything that makes it a little less generic, but I'd gladly take anyone's suggestions for what book this might be! :)
