Hello,

Today my garage door started stopping approx 2' off the ground. I believe the drive is called a screw drive because if I look at the track, it's not a chain, it looks like a long threaded screw in the track. Anyway, it stops just as the part that glides across the track passes over a smooth type area in the screw drive. I don't think anythings broken there because there are like 2 of these short smooth sections where it looks like the track connects to another section of track.

If I am standing inside the garage and gently pushing up on the door as it passes that area, then it will open fine.

What could the problem be? Maybe a week spring? I did notice that the spring on one side of the garage is loose (no tension at all) when the garage is open where the other has just a slight amount of tension.

The loose spring is more likely the culprit here.

The change that loose spring will make is the door has more resistance to open or close being the door is racked in its track thus causing the 'Closing/Opening force " adjustments on the motor to be out of wack in its "Force" for the door to travel in it track.

Use EXTREME CAUTION on spring adjustments for any garage door. Only adjust when door is in full open position.

I somewhat agree with Boat but there is no smooth area on a screw drive. The screw comes in sections that slide together making a continuous screw, if you have a gap then they sections are coming apart. What brand is this, Chamberlain? Chamberlain Product Help Center

For spring safety, run a cable through spring and mount it on each end to door ceiling bracket. If spring breaks this will keep it from dropping and causing damage or hurting someone.
