    Kitty Tapeworms
    Hello,

I have two cats. One is near 6 years old his name is jumbo (choco persian) and the second one is 9 weeks old his name is george. We got george from a guy my husband works with, he had said it was an indoor cat I think he fibbed. The kitty was infested with fleas. I picked nearly 70 off the poor little guy he was miserable. I also noticed the rice like things in his poop. I suspected worms, and the other day I saw them moving and am sure of it. I ordered meds for him to treat tapeworms. How many doses does it take to get rid of the tapeworms? Can I get the tapeworms from kissin the kitty on the mouth, or from what type of contact can I contract the Tapeworms from the kitty. I am concerned for my family health in addition to my kitty's health. I got him stuff for fleas as well to treat both my kitties. Any words of wisdom here? THank you so much.

    Re: Kitty Tapeworms
    Hello,

Don't be too sure the guy fibbed. Some of the worst flea infestations I have seen were on indoor only cats. Once the indoor environment is contaminated, the cats have no place to go to get away from the fleas.

The tapeworms are from the fleas. In order to get the tapeworms, you would have to ingest a flea. There is no other way to get them.

As to how many doses, that depends on the kind of medication (make sure it does tapes) and how much the kitty's weigh.

I highly recommend Cestex which can be bought from your local vet. It only takes one dose and the pills are very small.

Also, be careful about what flea medicine you put on your cats. Persians especially are highly sensitive to toxins. Anything you buy over the counter at Wal-mart or other such places is OUT OF THE QUESTION! These are toxic poisons which are more likely to kill the cat than the fleas.

Advantage is the safest flea control you can buy... period!

Get it from your vet. You shouldn't need to take the cats in as along as you know if they are over or under 9 lbs.

Advantage stays on the skin and does NOT go into the blood stream. Treating your cats for at least 4 months in a row (religiously every 28 to 30 day) should take care of the fleas on them and in the environment.

I can almost guarantee if they were that covered in fleas, some of them jumped off in your house. Advantage will take care of anything in your home as well if used for 4 months in a row.

    I hope this helps!

    Regards,

Its definitely best to see your vet they can prescribe the best products which are normally prescription only medicines. Drontal is good for worms one tablet treats an averaged sized cat (4kg) for 3 months. Frontline is good for fleas each vial lasts 6-8 weeks. ;)
