I also am having that problem. I live in Oregon and my baby daddy left me when he found out I was pregnant and I have not seen him in a year. He also got another woman pregnant and has a daughter that's a month younger then my son. I have tried to get him to see my son or even ask but he wanted nothing to do with me or my baby. When I was 5 months pregnant I got together with one of my old ex's and we are getting married next month. How I heard I have to be married for a year for him to adopt my son but I needed to know if my sons last name would change when I get married or if my hubby needs to adopt my son and also around about how much does the adoption cost. I have a very limited income and my hubby acts as father to my son even though he is not biologically related at all. I really don't know where to start looking or if I can even afford to get a attorney in Oregon or what the laws are for this sort of thing here. (in need of help if anyone can)

First its not a good idea to piggyback your question on someone else's. This can lead to confusion. You should start a new thread. So I've moved your question to its own thread.

Second, please don't ignore posting guidelines. At the top of the Adoption forum (where this was moved from) is a Read First sticky, that directs question of a legal nature to this forum.

I'm curious as to what you have done to get the father to see his child? Did you just ask or did you go to court for child support and establish a visitation schedule?

A birth certificate is a legal document and cannot be changed except by court order. The father would have to approve it.

As for adoption, that will change the name, but again the father needs to consent. However, if you go after him for support now, he may be more willing to consent since it will relieve him of support.

Shop around for an attorney now. This way you can find out the fees and save up for after you are married the prescribed amount of time.

Attorney's rates are all different because they set their own rates (except for the court costs). Start shopping around that way you know how much and how long you need to save up. The bio father does not have to have any contact with the child, that is his right. However, if you go to court for support he will have to pay. Knowing they will no longer owe support tends to sway a lot of people toward allowing the adoption.

No one here can tell you the cost of an adoption because we don't know all the circumstances surrounding your situation. If its uncontested and all parties co operate then its going to be cheap. If not it can get very VERY expensive.
