    How do you determine operating income by using the variable-costing approach to product costing?

    Variable costing excludes fixed manufacturing overhead from inventoriable costs. Under variable costing fixed overhead is a period cost, whereas under absorption costing fixed overhead appears in the cost of goods sold and the production volume variance.
