    Fan speed wiring
I removed the fan switch but did not write down the color with the position. Ihave a 4 wire switch. Black, orange, yellow, and purple. If I find the main source wire , can I then connect it to each of the other 3 wires one at a time and find out which speed each one is or is it the wrong way of going at it. Or do all the wires have to be connected in the right position for the fan to work. Ihave a meter but don't know how to really use it unless some one can give me some pointers. I do know how to test for continity, voltage and amps
