Ok, I started having problems with my gas heat at the end of last year but then it got warm and I just said the heck with it. Well now its starting to get cold again and my heat is doing the same thing and I have no idea what it is. Ive got gas heating to my house with the central unit outside. I have a programmable thermostat in the house and if I turn the heat on in the house it won't work. I have to go out and reset the breaker Every time I want it to kick on. It will run fine then but as soon as it get up to tempeture and turns off the next time it goes to light it won't light. It will kick itself out again. I have to then again go back out and reset the main breaker for it on the side of the house before it will kick back in. This is really getting to be a pain in the butt. Especially on REALLY cold mornings when I have to run out there because its 40 some degrees in my house. Anybody know what would cause it to not ignite and keep messing up like that? On a side note its not actually tripping the breaker like its overloading I just have to switch the breaker switch for the heat from the on position back to off and then back to on again for it to kick itself back in. Any help would be great. Thanks.

If it is tripping the breaker it is a high voltage problem, typically it will be a bad blower motor from your description. It is also posibly just a loose connection if there is a voltage drop through a poor connection it will try to draw more amps. Is this 120 or 240 volts?

Since the breaker is not tripping "On a side note its not actually tripping the breaker like its overloading i just have to switch the breaker switch for the heat from the on position back to off and then back to on again", is it possible there is a relay in the unit that is getting reset once you shut off the power?

If it is tripping the breaker it is a high voltage problem, typically it will be a bad blower motor from your description. It is also posibly just a loose connection if there is a voltage drop thru a poor connection it will try to draw more amps. Is this 120 or 240 volts?

Well would it technically be tripping the breaker if the breaker isn't actually cutting out? The breaker never kicks over to the off side like it tripped out. That's just the only way I have found to get it to cut back on in to turn the breaker to the off position myself and then turn it back on. Anytime I've seen a breaker trip it they actually cut over to the off position. This stays in the ON position and I have to turn it off by hand and then back on myself. I believe it's a 240 volt also. I can double check but pretty sure it is. Its just dark and cold outside right now and I'm heading to bed. I can post for sure tomorrow. I had gone through last year when it was doing this and cleaned all the connections and put them back on so they should be all right. I also made sure all connections were tight. If it's a bad blower motor would it still work at all even after resetting it? If it is that are they hard to fix if I had to do it myself? Just curious. Thanks for the help by the way.

OK, if it's not really tripping the breaker, you are just resetting the circuit board. Most modern furnaces have a diagnostic light. Count the flashes and then look it up on the legend, usually inside the blower door. It should tell you what is going wrong.
