Tom or John: The bathroom faucet worked out real good. Now the singe handle kitchen faucet decided to join the parade. It is a single handle moen with the same cartridge as the bathroom one. This time the cost is on me and I am wondering if either of you know the number size of the "O" rings in the cartridge. I thought it might be worth a try to change them and see if it works. A buck in a half verses twenty. If I have to I will take the cartridge out and take the o rings to a hardware store. Much easier if I had the size. I had a Vaughn hydra stone hot water tank installed a couple of months ago and I am wondering if some of the dust that might have been on the hydra stone much have worked its way through the system and messed up the faucets. Not a buck and a half but almost 25$ You nightdo better taking the cartridge in to a plumbing shop and replacing the "O' rings, Pick up a tube of silicon jel for lubricant.

Hi Bob, Tom have given you good advice,I would also suggest to close the angle valves under the sink, remove the cartridge then turn on the water for a second both hot and cold to flush out the debris, lubricate the orings, install the cartridge and see if the problem is fixed, if not call Moen customer service at 800-882-0116 and the will send you a new cartridge with no charge to you, and tell us the results, Thanks.

I replaced the cartridge, used silicone on the o rings and reinstalled it. On hindsight I don't believe it was the cartridge. The spout, I think should go down to the base and the shaped nut on top should fit down snugly on the nylon washer on top of the spout. I doesn't and so the spout can wiggle about 1/64th of an inch. The nut is snug but there is that space. This pushes up the top of the nut (that the handle attaches to) meaning that when you tighten up the screw that holds the handle on it pulls up the cartridge slightly and I think that is what makes is leak when the pump puts the pressure up to 60 lbs. I won't leak for hours and then it will. You can go to bed, no leak wake up in the am no leak. In the meantime overnight it might leak 2 or 3 ounces of water. I am at wits end. It works beautifully except for the leak.
Any suggestions will be appreciated or I see a new faucet in my future.

Hey Bob,
The spout should fit fairly snug against the base. It shouldn't have any play.
I'm putting up a image that should be close to your faucet. Check the diverter and see that it's seated correctly. Also check that the spout slips over the "O" ring on the base instead of riding top of it. If that's so you've found where the gap comes from. Something's hanging spout up see if you can spot it. Tom: Thanks for the great parts breakout and advice. It appears that my faucet has one piece. I can't see where the diverter is a separate piece. I can't see how you would seat it down more. I didn't want to break anything. I believe the problem is there because there still is a little travel left on the cartridge when the handle bottoms out. I believe the diverter should go lower so the bottom of the cartridge travel is even with the top of the diverter. If I put the spout all the way flush with the base it raises up when you first put the water on. Any thoughts on the diverter seating. There doesn't seem to be any sensible way to hold it to get it down without damaging something. Thanks again Bob

Tom: I took a closer look at the parts list versus the actual faucet and realized I don't have a diverter. The pivot nut goes right over the retaining clip holder. That unit that the cartridge goes in is one piece down to the base same as the drawing. Everything except the diverter is pretty much the same. The ears on the retained holder don't seem to allow the cartridge to close all the way down and the pivot nut at its tightest still leaves a very slight gap over the spout so it will not set down flush and stay there. Sorry I didn't look more carefully before writing the above. Thanks Bob

OK! So you have a flapper type diverter in place of a skirt diverter. I'm focusing on the two "O" rings on the shaft. The bottom one in particular. Lube the "O" rings with silicon jel and force the spout to slip over the bottom "O" ring. Now, tighten the retaining nut down. Will that work for you?

Tom: I had done that and the spout easily goes right down flush with the base. The retaining nut, however, bottoms before it totally reaches the nylon washer on top of the spout. You probably could slip a piece of shirt cardboard in the void. As I said if I bottom out the spout it will pop up the first time you use the faucet. Bob

The cost of the cartridge was on me because Moen was nice enough to spring for a cartridge for my shower/bath cartridge even though it was before the guarantee was in effect so I thought I'd buy the kitchen one myself. D

You are generous but I always take advantage of their free parts if time permits. Sometimes a HO is in a hurry and just wants a new cartridge now, not next week.

Tom: The parts breakout you sent to me is a little different. The water comes up the middle whereas my faucet the water comes in each side and there is what looks like a split nut in the middle with nothing coming off it except a bolt that is maybe l inch long and there is also a nut on it. I believe now what might have happened is that the initial problem was the cartridge. Is is possible that when taking out the cartridge the spout retained came up a little and that is what is making it higher than the top of the cartridge and thus stopping the spout retaining nut from taking the spout all the way to the bottom. If so is there anything I can do or do I need to replace the faucet. The cartridge as not easy to pull out even after rotating it several times and pulling straight up might have moved the spout retainer. Sorry to be a pain. Thanks Bob

Bob, The spray hose is what you see in the center. The supplies are two copper tubes on either sid
See the "O" ring on the bottom? Remove the retaining nut and pull the spout up. Now take silicon jel and lube\ the "O" rings and the inside of the spout.
Now force the spout down over BOTH "O"rings until it bottoms out.
Snug the retaining nut back up and you should be OK. Good luck, Tom

Tom: The problem is not in bottoming out the spout it is in being able to bottom out the retaining nut. It leaves a space about equal to the thickness of a shirt carboard when it is tightened as tight as possible. The next step would be to overtighten the nut and I don't think that is advisable. That's what made me think the spout retainer rose up when I was taking the cartridge out. Bob
