I am looking for a sci-fi book with a similar plot to Orwell's 1984. The book was set in the future when the gov't controlled every aspect of its citizens' lives, and kept tabs on its citizenry via closed circuit television monitors in every home. The gov't had enacted total population control with mandated abortion machines installed in every home. If a couple desired to have a child, they went to a gov't store and chose a child (clone?) based on desired physical characteristics.

The main characters in the book decided to not use their abortion machine and became pregnant. The gov't found out & they received a death sentence via a huge bubble being sealed over their home and being cut off from food & water. The couple had previously dug a survival cave and escape tunnel under their home where they had stashed emergency supplies, and they eventually made their way to a radioactive island in Michigan (?) to live out their remaining days in peace with other citizens who had refused to bow to gov't control.

I first read this book in the mid-70's when I was a student aide in my high school library. At the time, and in my rose-colored glasses innocence, I believed the plot to be very implausible, and recommended that the book not be placed on the library's shelves. In light of current events, the plot doesn't seem as implausible as it did 30 odd years ago.

Sounds like the movie: Z.P.G. (1972) although I can't seem to find any information on it being based on a book, so possibly it's just really similar.

Thanks for your input Quinn. ZPG does sound very similar, I'll have to see if I can locate a copy of it and watch it.
