    Tool for Recessed Fittings
    Greetings

I just purchased a new Whirlpool water heater. The hot and cold fittings are recessed into the top of the heater. Is there a wrench that allows me to reach into the recess to tighten the fittings rather than grabbing onto the copper pipe above the fittings?

    Thanks

Not sure what you are looking at, but there is a tool that is uses on faucet fittings. It's a spring mounted claw at the end of a long rod with a cross piece on the other end. The claw grabs the nut holding the fitting and the cross pieces allows for turning.

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean.

Are you saying there are two female threaded openings in the tank, and that there are male copper fittings screwed into these openings?

Pictures are always a help, by the way.

    Hi Cylde,

If all you wish to do is tighten the fitting I would use a brass nipples totighten the recessed fittings and connect the copper pipes with female adapters. Good luck, Tom

My concern was that somebody had screwed copper directly into the top of the tank.

I've seen a number of incidents where electrolysis has eaten away the welded ports of hot water tanks so much that they had to be scrapped.
