    Doberman weight gain
I have an active 14 month old female doberman. She eats all the time, but doesn't seem to gain weight. You can see her ribs and spine through her coat. She's very active and happy, but just doesn't seem to gain weight. Is it normal for a doberman to be this skinny. If not, any recommendations on what to feed her to bulk her up. I am a first time doberman owner and need to find out more information. Thank You.

Hello, I would like to help but need more questions answered. First, what has her worming skd been? Heartworm Prevention? What is she being fed? Is she spayed?
    Thanks, D

You have discussed this with her vet? What does he say? It is very unusual for a healthy dog not to eat at least enough to at least only have the ribs show a little. I would move up to a meat based concentrated chow. Some of you larger pet stores and feed barns may carry house brands of the meat based, concentrated chows. Never risk a dog's health on an untested home recipe. Modern dog chows are all tested to make sure they are a complete and balanced diet. If you are not feeding a meat based chow, switch to something such as Pro Plan, Eukanuba, or Iams. That is what all the service dog schools suggest for their extremely valuable dogs. Those insisting on more expensive chows have some agenda other than your dog's health, perhaps they are selling a premium brand.

My first question is... have you asked your vet? Have you had any bloodwork done? Also, are you sure she's getting enough food? If she's active, the food guidelines on the side of the package may not be adequate for her. Also, does she show signs of itching or upset tummy? Maybe food allergies??

Wish I could help more... :(

There has been a slew of questions here lately about dogs refusing to eat enough. BMbrush brings up a good point. I didn't think to suggest feeding her more. Package recommendations are only a starting point. I was once given an under weight 7 month old Lab. Took 7 cups of Pro Plan a day to start putting some meat on her bones. Later I had another Lab that it took 6 cups a day to maintain ideal body condition. Most of my Labs are on the small side, and 3-4 cups does fine.
