I just bought a single house. It had been vacant for several months. Whenever I run water, I get this loud humming/vibrating sound from the basement.Any clues?

A hum is caused by something vibrating. Start the noise and go down to the basement. Go to where the hum's the loudest and start feeling pipes and valves for the vibration that feels the strongest, Get back to me with the results. Good luck, Tom
