Payne Outside Air Fan Stopped Working @ 3am
Thanks in advance for all the assistance.

The outside unit is a Payne and at 3am this morning the AC stopped working which brought the temp in the house up quickly an the two little ones were awake quick and not to happy.

I have searched the forum a little and came across a few topics that described a little the trouble I'm expericeing.

    This is what happened...

The AC was working fine until 3am at which time I went outside to check the fan and it was not turning. I went back in and turned the AC off. Went back outside and the unit was HOT. I thought it best to cool it with water so I did. It has been off until about 11:30am when I went out to get a better look as it was to dark even with a flashlight last night.

I removed the panel and all wires look fine the "capasitor" as mentioned in another post looked fine, not swollen in any way.

I went outside to get a view; this is what happens when you turn the AC on...

You hear a noise as if power is tying to turn something on, but the fan doesn't turn at all and there a slight steam (NOT smoke) coming from inside. ( I was thinking it might be steaming the water that was sprayed on it at 3.

If there is any further info that I can provide, please advise.

    THANKS!

It is possible the outside units capacitor of fan motor has become defective. If you know how to repair such items I would start by checking the capacitor or replacing it then move on to the motor if necessary. If you do not feel comfortable working with electricity then it is time to call in a professional for a on site survey of the situation.

Well it turned out it was the fan motor. As that was replaced the "hard start" fried so I replaced that as well.

    Thanks for the help.
