    OPT returns on SSN,Medicare etc.
    Hi,
Iam on OPT(student) started from feb2009 .I got job 2 weeks back(july8th 2009).My paycheck generated from CA .

    OASDI($72) , medicare(17) ,federal tax w/h($99) ,state w/h($22) and state SDI($13) were deducted from my paycheck.what is oasdi,state sdi.

What all I get back when I file for returns.how much fedaraltax and state tax refund will be like how much percent they cut when they refurnd?

And I filed W-4 form when I joined, now my employer says that for opt people also IRS charges ssn and medicare as I filed w-4 and will I get this money back afterwards?

    Thanks in Advance,

If you did not spend 5 years on F1 and OPT, then you are nonresident. You are exempt from SS tax and Medicare tax. You will pay federal and state income taxes.

Ask your employer to refund you the FICA taxes. Send them an email. They can still do it.
Also ask them to stop withholding these taxes.

You should print pages 48 and 49 of IRS Publication 519: Tax For Aliens and give it to your employer. Ask them for refund of SS tax and Medicare Tax.

First, the refund of improperly-wthheld FICA taxes by the employee is done using Form 843, NOT on your annual tax return.

It is both easier and quicker for the employer to get the refund by amending the quarterly Form 941 than for you to submit Form 843 for the FICA refund.

Further, your employer is being stupid! For every dollar YOU pay in FICA taxes, they pay a dollar as well. Point this fact out to the payroll person who is handling your case, to give them an incentive to get a refund of past taxes paid as well.
