Condenser on central unit not working
The condenser on my central air conditioning stopped working. The fan doesn't turn and I hear no noise coming from the condenser. Could it be that it is totally gone, or is there any hope that possibly it could be something simple and could be fixed.

Also note, that it seemed to be low on freon the last couple of days -- the round cylinder thing was freezing up.

Please help... any advice would be helpful.

1st,check the breakers (turn completely off and then back on

2nd,check to see that you have 24 volts at the contactor causing it to be activated

3rd,look at capicitor behing cover, does it have corroded or broken wires,is it swollen up or the top (which should be flat) puffed up/swollen

4th,carefully with a meter check for 240 volts across the contactor at connection where main wires go into unit
Let us know what you find

Now as for the being low on freon/cylinder thing freezing up,you will have to call out a qualified tech to do that,, could be dirty, inside coil stopped up or fan running to slow,or low on freon. Most all of this is something the average homeowner can`t do

    Breakers were fine

I will have someone do steps 2,3, and 4. Hopefully it will be something simple, being a single parent on a fixed income is kind of tricky... I appreciate your help and will keep you posted on what I find

And as for as the freon -- didn't need it. Ball bearings in the fan motor were bad, caused the unit to heat up and it had a safety switch which shut off the unit. Don't know why it was freezing up, they did clean my unit, it was very dirty. They said it possibly was that. Once again thanks wmproop for responding.
