Repair and replacement costs for central air unit
Have a Sears 13000 Seer central air unit. Purchased in summer 2006. Was having problems last summer - water dripping onto electrical components below coils. Had it looked at 3 weeks ago, technician said coils were blocked and had to be replaced. Also replaced capacitor(?). Total cost ~2200. A week later, unit stops working altoghether. Did notice that there were times when it sounded like the fan would rev really fast then slow down then rev really fast again then slow down, then it would blow steady. Called technician again - did some poking around and said it wasn't the motor but now the computer board is not functioning. Would need to replace it. Cost ~600 + labor.

I feel like I'm being hosed. The unit is only 3 years old and I will have spent ~3000 on repairs. That's already half of what it cost me to purchase the unit. This is the first central air unit I've purchased so I don't have a basis for comparison. Does the diagnosis and quoted cost seem reasonable?

HELLO almost all equipment has a 5 year warranty on parts. I think you better check into that. BTW many manufactures also offer a 10 year parts warranty as standard.

So as of right now I think you are being taken to the cleaners. I would not tell your neighbors since what happened to you is like getting your pants pulled down in public and spanked.

Also coils are cleaned if they are dirty not replaced. Cleaning is a 100.00 job. You have really been taken to the cleaners. I would ask for my $$$ back if they do not give it call the BBB and get a lawyer. If this happened like you say it will be a good day for you in court.
