Recently had wall to wall carpet installed in family room. The carpet butts against a transition strip at the doorway to the kitchen. There seems to be some loose ends / loops in the gap. I don't want to trim them for fear the next lops will do the same thing. I'm thinking I can lay a bead of glue (or caulk) in the gap to seal the ends and prevent fraying. Can anybody advise 1) whether this approach makes sense, and 2) what glue or other material should I use? Please advise brand name as well.

If you paid someone to lay the carpet they are responsible for making that transition ravel free. The transition strip should have come up prior to installation and then a new carpet to hard floor transition strip installed.

You are right, but I'd rather do it myself (if I can)

The carpet should butt up against the transition strip just like it does your wall or baseboard. Bet the transition strip is recessed into the doorway a little. Sounds like a poor installation to me. About any clear glue should do. Try some clear silicone, just enough to coat the edge of the carpet. Are there any remnants left from the installation? If so cut a strip a little wider than the gap between the carpet and transition strip. Stuff in between the carpet and the transition, tack down with a couple small finish nails. Could put in a wider transition and make it butt up against the carpet.

Thanks; I'll try the clear silicone first. The gap isn't very wide. I think the problem is caused by a) the carpet pile is high (and sort of loose) and b) the pad is soft and thick which combine to cause a little flexing and fraying along the edge. Fraying may be too strong a word. Loops and ends start coming out of the gap and laying across the transition. Currently, I'm tucking them back in by hand.
