    Soft Asphalt Driveway
I had my driveway paved last Tuesday. 6 days later, it is scarring when vehicles drive on it and you can see your foot print when you walk on it. The temperature has been hot a couple of days (80) but otherwise quite moderate (60). Any ideas? I have to call the guy but suspect I may get the runaround...

After hot mix asphalt cools to about 160 to 180 degrees, it is no longer subject to being compacted. Certainly, an hour or so after the rolling has been completed, normal vehicle loads shouldn't make a depression in the driveway.
There are many different mix designs being used and asphalt can be defective, but it is clear that this is a serious problem.

Did the installer pull a city permit? If so ask the building inspector if he inspected the job and tell him about your issue. This is most likely a very poor, substandard installation and material.

Thank you for the answers. No city permits or inspectors here to go to... Smearcase, now 2 week old asphalt crumbles when I smoosh my foot into it at the edge and if you turn the wheels it scars the pavement. Paver has agreed to come back and "heat and re-roll" the ashpalt... is that going to fix it do you think without taking it up? We live on an island some 3 hours from the asphalt plant... maybe more depending on ferries... could it be the mix cooled too much before it was rolled?
