I have a challenger series diaphragm well tank model #pr122rf. It is full of water. I emptied the system of water then went to repressurize the tank but it already had 62 lbs pressure in it with all water drained out. I kicked the pump back on and the tank refilled with water not changing the pressure and my pressure switch won't cut off. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

If your tank was full of water, then the bladder is ruptured and the tank is toast. BTW, how do you know it was full of water? Did you press the air valve at the top and see water come out? If so, then it has to be replaced. Thankfully, that is not the most difficult job in the world.

When you speak of the pump not cutting off, what pressure does your gauge read while the pump is running?

Thanks for the quick response. I can feel the weight of the water in the tank. No water comes out when I push the valve stem so it is only a guess that the tank is full of water. The tank is only a few years old so I have my doubts of its failure but why would it be so heavy if not filling with water? The pressure switch just stays on unless I separate the contacts, then it immediately forces the contacts back together and makes a pressure sound in the tank. The last few times I let the contacts go, the switch kicked on and off rapidly until I held it in the on position, then just stayed on. There is no pressure gauge on the pressure switch so I don't know what pressure is in the bladder until I check it with an external gauge. I don't know what pressure the pressure switch is set for either. Any suggestions?? Thanks again. David

Install a pressure gauge to the house side of pressure valve.

The pressure valve has directions for adjusting pressure on/off inside cover.

Pressure tank should be set 2PSI lower than low setting on pressure valve.

If low setting on valve is 40 PSI then tank is set at 38 PSI. The tank pressure is set when tank is empty.

This should solve your problem.

Hey chuck, thanks for the advice. I am going to home depot tomorrow to pick up the parts I need to install the pressure gauge. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again. Do you know anything about water softeners? I have an ecowater systems unit that is giving me an error code of E-1 and I can't get it to clear. I have had many headaches with my water system lately.

There are several ways to check your tank. It has a air valve on top like a valve on a tire. Push it in, you should not get any water out of that valve at all. Another way is to tap the tank from the bottom up. You will hear a "clunk" on the bottom filled with water, however you should hear a "clang" near the top filled with air. If you have water up to the top the bladder has ruptured and the tank must be replaced. To set the air pressure in a bladder tank, look at the cut-in pressure on your pressure switch. Now drain the line down with the pump off. When there is no more water coming out of the hose bib that you drained the system down with set the pressure in the bladder tank at 2 lbs. below the cut-in pressure. Check it with a tire gage. If your pressure control is set to come on at 20 PSI and go off at 40 PSI then your gage should read 18 PSI. Hope this helps and thank you for rating my reply.
