    Dryer problems
My dryer is making a squeaking noise when it is drying the clothes. It is a very loud and piercing noise. What could be wrong?

You didn't indicate the model number, so I can't give any more specific information.

Squeaks in dryers are commonly caused by the following.

Some dryers have a drum support bearing in the back - middle of the drum. This bearing, when it fails, can cause a loud and piercing noise. The fix is to remove the drum and replace the bearing.

Other squeaky noises can be made by the drum support rollers. The rollers have ball-bearings that also can fail. When they do, they usually cause a loud squeak. It's not usually as loud as the drum support bearing, but it can be pretty loud. This is one of the more common squeaky noises. The fix is to remove the drum and then replace the idler pulleys.

The belt that turns the drum can squeal if it slips on the drum. I don't believe this is as common as the rollers, but it can happen. Also, there is an idler pulley whose bearing can also fail and cause a squeak. The fix is to replace the belt or the idler pulley. You also need to figure out why the belt is squealing. It might be slightly greasy so it needs to be cleaned up or the idler pullen needs to be replaced.

Finally, the motor bearing can go bad. This isn't usually a high-pitched squeal (thouth it might be occasionally). The fix is to replace the motor.

It's not very hard to remove a dryer drum (it's always a bother). Give me the make and model and I'll see if I can find some definite instructions for you.

My Amana dryer is squealing AND buzzing. Squealing when it might decide to run, and then if it turns on, it runs but cuts off midcycle. When I press the start button it makes a buzzing sound (like the timer buzzer) and may or may not turn on. Model # LEA80AW. Thanks for any help/advice out there!

Frigidaire Dryer Problems [ 4 Answers ]

Foreword: I have no idea what the model number of my dryer is. I bought it second-hand, and the model number had been on a sticker inside the door; needless to say it isn't there any more. It was made some time between 2000 and 2002 is all I know. (Sorry if I seem a bit defensive, I just had to...
