    Irregular flange/waste pipe
After removing the leaking toilet and preparing to install the new wax ring, I noticed that the upper surface of the drain pipe is irregular and jagged. It extends above the level of the floor in most places. Do I need or want to grind it down before installing the new wax ring? The toilet sat on the concrete slab and when I replace the linoleum tile, it won't be very thick so I'm thinking that having the height of the pipe be the same as the floor is OK. Am I correct? Here is a picture to show the jagged edge. I'm pretty sure there is a decent flange buried under the dirt/plaster. The pipe is cast iron and it is probably 65 years old. The toilet had lots of plaster (or powdery old wax) underneath. There are also hairline cracks on the base of the toilet but the outflow hole looks okay.

Toilet will absorb some of the protruding edges, but I agree, you could grind it down to the floor lever. Btw: photo didn't post...

It doesn't look that bad. I see two, maybe three, high points but they will be absorbed by wax ring. Clean the other side so you can insert new brass bolt. In fact, I would replace both of them. Use tall wax ring. It will take care of all the unevenness.

Closet Flange in weird waste pipe [ 3 Answers ]

In the process of redoing basement bathroom (new tile, new sink, etc) and when I took off the toilet, the old closet bolts sheared off - nice and rusty. Waste Flange (top) to floor distance [ 2 Answers ]

I just repaired a bathroom floor in this 1927 house. The house flooring has sagged. In the repair I took off about 2 1/2 inches of old floor and scabbed on reinforcing 2 x 8's to the weak lumber. Now the floor is very nice and strong (I used 3/4" treated plywood). My problem is that the top of...
