Tye nice option you have is to slave this noisy one as a second drive to make sure you get all the data off it. Once that's done you can wipe it and chuck it.

Make sure you have your Windows CD and registration key first. Buy the new drive but make sure you are using the same type of connectors (EIDE vs SATA). Open the case and remove the old, plug in the new. Put the Windows CD in the drive and reboot.

Do you have another PC handy to ask questions during the process?

I'd suggest Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost to clone one hard drive to a new one (I've used Acronis, but it's been a few years). Then you can replace the old one with the new hard drive and it should boot without problems. I'm not sure if you'll have to reauthenticate Windows or not. Ideally, if the rest of the computer configuration is unchanged Windows should not have a problem.

Most likely you'd need a DVD writer in your system, not sure if a CD would hold your image.

I have had cases where I thought the hard drive was making noise and it turned out to be one of the fans. Make sure it's the hard drive for sure before getting involved in replacing it.
