When I file for divorce is it then public record? Or does it become public record only after it has moved through the court system?

It's public record once an index number is assigned.

Is there a reason you are concerned about it being on the public records?

It is public record shortly after filed, Not that anyone really searches them.

Is there a reason you are hiding the divorce.
