I have people that are living in my house (man, wife, two teenage children). I allowed them to stay for a couple of weeks while they were making repairs to a home down the street that they were to move in to. That was March. This is almost July. I want them to leave, but they tell me that I can't make them leave without going to court. I called the local athorities and they tell me that I have to wait five days.

I think it is crazy to wait any days, since they do not pay rent, utilities, or any other money to me. I don't understand why I don't have the right to tell someone that they must leave MY house that I pay for. Can anyone explain this to me? Why do they have rights in my house?

You have to give them a written notice for the five days and then if they do not pay you have to go to court and get them evicted through the court. If they still don't leave the court will send sheriffs/constables to escort them out when the time is up that the court has given them to be out by.

If somebody spends even a night at your house, receives mail, says that is their residence,. they can be considered tenants and you have to go through the process.

Why is this?
It is the way the law has been handling this for some years now. I can only guess the police and courts got tired of dealing with domestic quarrels and bogus Protection From Abuse orders between gf/bf's where the girl would kick the boyfriend out every time they had a fight and then take him back.
