Ok to upgrade furnace motor from 1/2 to 3/4 hp?
Hello, and thank you ahead of time for any helpful info. I currently have a Rheem Classic 90 Plus RGRA-07EMAES serial 5H5D702F480003896 75000 BTU furnace with a 1/2 HP (373) Furnace blower motor. I have read that this blower motor is a week 3 ton blower motor for A/C. Cooling is Set at high speed and heating is at med/hi. I just competed my lower levels and the 1/2 hp it just not doing the job. The next model up RGRA-O7EYBGS is a 75000 BTU with the 3/4 hp motor. It is set to cool at high speed and to heat at med/low. I would like to first know if I can change out the Furnace motor to the 3/4 hp and put the settings at the recommended settings. And 2nd I would like to know what is the part # for the 3/4 hp blower motor from the RGRA-07EYBGS. If you know anyone that I could call if this would work to order the part that would be helpful also. I think the board can handle the power demand of the 3/4 correct.

It is OK to change the motor.

Usually in this kind of item you just match the higher HP motor to the same configuration as the old 1/2 HP motor. This way you buy any brand of motor you want. NOTE you will probably have to replace the run capacitor for the motor also since it might be a different size.

Upgrade the blower motor [ 3 Answers ]

Ok, a recent thread mentioned something about upgrading the blower motor. That's exactly what I want to do. My reasons are that, while the air gets cool enough, the flow is just not what I would like probably mostly due to the crappy flex ducts the builders use these days. One solution that has...
