This should be posted in Electrical & Lighting - Ask Me Help Desk

The guys there are more expert in that field than I am. They can tell you how to meet code, etc.

Basically, you need a live, a neutral and a ground wire (bare). You also need a circuit that will handle the load. Switching from 220 to 110 involves doubling the current, if everything else is equal.

Let me see if I've understood your poorly-worded question...

You have an air-conditioner that's designed to run on 220V (i.e. it has a 220V compressor motor), and you want to be able to run it on 110V. Is that it?

If that's your question, the quick answer is: you probably can't 'rewire' the air-con to do this, though it depends on the type of motor and its configuration. Your best bet would be to get an electrician to install a 2- or 3-phase outlet so you have 220V available. Which you need depends on the air-con supply requirements. If you don't already have two or three phases running into your house, this will probably be expensive.

    Where are you located?

If your in North America, you have 120 and 240 volts available.

If your in Europe or another country, you may only have 220-240 volts available.

You cannot rewire a 240 volt appliance to run on 120 volt.

You can rewire a 240 volt circuit to 120 volts, but need to know the ampacity of the circuit and the appliance.
