Stopping Weeds When Laying Down New Gravel
I am planning to restone my driveway and the previous owner used a small pea-sized gravel. It has basically pushed down in the dirt, and the driveway is virtually covered in weeds.

The company that I'm ordering stones from, advised me to go with a bigger stone as well as putting down some sort of tampering paper. They mentioned that it will help with the weeds and also keep the driveway from rutting.

Has anyone ever heard of the tampering paper? I was also considering just putting down plastic, but the first part of the driveway is on a downward sloping hill. Would 3 inches of 2 size gravel hold up in the rain?

I don't want to put all the money into restoning the driveway, to have it covered in weeds the following year.

    Thanks in advance!

I haven't heard of Tampering paper, but plastic is not recommended.

Weed fabric or fabric that's used for drainage should be used. It is porous. Weeds won't be completely stopped.

Remember to tamp the soil with a mechanical tamper before laying the stone. Rent from the big box stores.

I don't know how much base is there now but min stoned driveways should be 6" thick. Also the should have quarry dust " crushed limestone mixed in the stone. Here we use 2a modified stone for a base. Unless there is a problem with disturbed soil/old driveway a mechanical tamper is not necessary here on old driveway. However a Jumping Jack tamper should be used after the stone is spread.

I have a gravel drive at my cabin and need to spray RoundUp every few weeks. Kill the weeds now or kill them later. We use 3/4" with fines evenly spread and then my wife's car seems to tamp it fairly well, she's all over the place.
