    Strange noise coming from toilet
I live in a condominium on the second floor of a 6 story condominium. Lately my toilet has been making a sound when it is not in use. The best way to describe it is that it sounds like a loud "shwoosh", as though someone has flushed it. It also sounds as though water is running and yet when I check, everything seems to be okay.
Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?:confused:

Check the tank water level, it should be at the mark in the tank or 3/8 to 1/2" below the top of the over flow tube. Now look at the flapper, If it has wavy edges on the flat surface, replace it. The linkage between the flapper and the flush lever should have 1/4" play when the tank is filled. Also, check the small tube coming out of the top of the ballcock and make sure it's connect to and draining into the white overflow tube. If you can't see a problem then click on back and tell me. Thanks speedball1 for such a quick response. My wife (who is the better of the two of us at these things),fixed the linkage. We checked the other things you suggested and they seemed to be working okay. We will now have to wait and listen to to see if this fixed the problem. I will get back to you and advise if it has been fixed.
    Again, thanks

    Hi Gary...

You will want to check all of the above as suggested by Tom...

If that fails to resolve this then I would have you pour some food coloring into the toilet tank and let that sit still for a few hours or more. If when you return there is colored water in the toilet BOWl then the flapper is defective and will need to be replaced.

Best bet when replacing a flapper is to get a name-brand flapper that matches the name on your toilet (american standard, kohler, toto, etc... ) instead of a universal-fit flapper. The universal flappers rarely work over the long run... ;)

Finally, there are times where even a new name-brand flapper will not fix issue. If this is the case, then the FLUSH VALVE ASSEMBLY will need to be replaced... sold as repair kit at any home improvement store.

Anyway, hope it is simple adjustment, but if not, try the DYE test... let us know what you discover...

Again, thanks, if Tom's ideas do not work then we will give the colour a shot. Now we just to wait and see if his ideas work out okay.
Thanks so much for the additional info. My wife, who is the "mechanical expert' here can't wait to try all these new suggestions.
