Part time or Non-resident? Which state?
I filed an extension for 2005 taxes and they are due on the 15th (Yes I realize I really waited too long)

I have a simple question, and am using taxcut and haven't seen it mentioned anywhere so far.

In 2005 I lived and worked in MA, Made wages, received a W-2 from these wages. In July, I quit that job, moved and took a new job in CA. I got a 1099 for work done here.

I assume I am a part time resident of each, and owe federal tax on the combined income. But for state I am confused if I am part or non resident of CA. Also I assume I just report the income made in MA to MA and the income made in CA to CA.

Am I correct on these assumptions?

Any and all help/suggestions are welcome!

You are a part-time resident of MA and CA.

California has you fill out Form 540(NR) as a part-year resident. You have to report ALL of your income, but you are only taxed on the California-based income.

Massachusetts uses Form 1-NR/PY. On that form, you report ONLY the MA-based income.

    Glad to help!

Again, the important thing is that California only taxes you on what you earn in California.

Yep! I'll make sure Taxcut takes care of that. I'll post here if it doesn't in case anyone else comes across this in searching.
