I'm having trouble with an older Homelite water pump, specifically with the two-stroke engine. I didn't use it over the winter, and now I'm having trouble getting it to start.

I've replaced the spark plug, clearned it, and done other basic maintenance. But there seems to be a problem with the air supply. When I pull the pullcord it is very difficult to pull, and sticks a little bit on each cycle of the piston.

It seems to be having trouble getting enough fresh air into the cylinder. When I remove the spark plug, air can enter the cylinder and the pullcord moves easily and smoothly.

I've adjusted the choke and other settings, but they make not difference

Is there an obstruction in a valve somewhere? What can I do to fix this?

I should add to my own post that I've removed and checked the air filter, and the problem is the same whether the air filter is present or not.

Hi,
There have been three Homelite water pumps with small two stroke engines. All share one thing in common as far as resistance to pulling over. That is rust/corrosion on the part of the shaft that is in the sleeve bearing as it enters the impeller housing. The impeller and housing must be disassembled and cleaned, and lightly lubricated and reassembled.
Get back if need be.

Hi Clarke, thanks for your answer. I've already lubricated the pump this spring, and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

The issue is with airflow. If I remove the spark plug, then it's a very easy pull because air can move in and out of the cylinder. However, if I cover the spark plug hole with my thumb, then the pull becomes very difficult again. It's not continuously difficult, it's only difficult in the part of the stroke where air is being sucked into the cylinder.

Is it possible that the air input valve is stuck? The valve for the exhaust is fine, air moves out of the cylinder easily. Thank you.

Hi Clarke, it reads XL52-1A. It's rated at 140 gallons per minute.
