    What do I do with the red wire? Socket replacement
    GOt some paint on a socket. Need to replace it?

    What do I do with this damn red wire?

    How was it connected before?? That should give you an idea of how the new one should be connected. Or maybe you just removed it without looking at what wires went where?


    Black to one gold screw.
    Red to the other gold screw.
    Break off the tab in between these two gold screws.

    White to either silver screw.

    Bare to the green screw.

    Pictures ALWAYS help greatly.

    I sure hope the power is off with those exposed wires.

    Hey Stanfortyman:

    Thank you for your reply. I am glad the pictures helped. The picture seem liked the rational thing to add.

    I figured that... Red and black are hot and go onto the gold bolt. White is neutral and goes onto the silver bolt. Ground goes on the green bolt.

    It turns out that there are three sockets with a similar layout in the kitchen. This setup doesn't work on any of these replacement sockets...

    Any thoughts?

    What do you mean it doesn't work? Does the breaker trip or they simply don't work?

    Just those three sockets. I have checked the breaker and that isn't the problem...

    Time to call an electrician?
